We’d like to congratulate Fightstar’s Charlie Simpson and the team at Jägermeister for achieving the Guiness World Record for officially playing The World’s Coldest Ever Gig!

Charlie and the Jäger team travelled down to the depths of Siberia and took on brutal -30c conditions to perform the Jägermeister Ice Cold Gig, which has officially earned its status as the official Guiness World Record!

Last year’s Jager Tour saw over 12,500 music fans from around the UK turn out to see Skindred, Therapy? and Black Spiders in venues up and down the country, playing packed-out shows in a unique sold out tour.

This year sees the incredible Ghost – a secretive Swedish rock outfit spewed out of the bowels of hell determined to bring about the collapse of humanity – alongside French metal heavyweights Gojira and British stalwarts The Defiled.

As part of the campaign we were asked by Jägermeister to develop a custom Facebook landing page, showcasing the bands and providing information about the tour dates, venues and ticket information.

Our solution was to develop a custom app, complete with YouTube videos, event listings and sharing tools.

The site itself is part of SDG’s growing SDG Network group of websites, a framework developed by BigSpring specifically for SDG, which allows them to quickly develop and deploy bespoke web projects in a streamlined and cost-effective way.

The brief

A few months ago we were approached by our friend and associate Jeremy Nock with a brief to develop an official website for Martin Jacobson, a leading professional poker player, and 7th in the World rankings.

The brief was simple… create a cool and clean site, optimised for iPad that really gives Martin a personal space to communicate with his fans and share updates, blogs, photos and other content easily.

Teaming up with the design ninjas at Threerooms, we quickly got to work on the new site – and we’re pretty happy with the results (if we may say so ourselves!).  We’re also pretty excited to work with a leading figure in the world of poker, partly because it’s quite different to what we normally do.

Powered by WordPress

We are CMS experts and the site is powered by the WordPress CMS, and features custom content types for blog posts, events and press releases, as well as Twitter integrations, which means that Martin can quickly and easily update his site one the go (as you can imagine he travels a lot!) via the site’s dashboard or using WordPress’ awesome iPhone and iPad apps.

Oh, and while you’re at it, if you follow poker yourself (or play a bit) you should check out Stackr, a groundbreaking iPhone app (coming soon to Android) developed by Martin, Jeremy and a few friends from the poker world.  It’s pretty good, if we say so ourselves!

What is a cookie and how does it affect me?

A cookie is a file that is saved onto your website visitor’s computer, and stores information about them or their visit.  Cookies are essential for some websites (such as some e-commerce systems), and are required by services such as Google Analytics to operate correctly.

Cookies are typically used for:

• Tracking and storing visitor behaviour (for example Google Analytics)
• Personalising the website (for example font sizes and colours)
• Shopping carts in online stores
• “Remember me” login options
• Tracking usage and delivering targeted advertising

If your website has any of the above features, chances are you’re using cookies – in fact, almost all websites use cookies in some way or another.

Failure to comply with the cookie directive could lead to legal implications including fines and other actions from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO); and although the law is primarily designed to combat the use of illicit tracking cookies and spyware, failure to comply with this regulation (even if your website is using them for legitimate purposes) could land you into trouble.

So what can I do about it?

Good news: becoming compliant is a relatively easy job, and we can definitely help!  The first step is to assess what information you’re storing and how.  We can then create and integrate the required plugins to create a nice user-friendly opt-in form complete with revised privacy policies.

Established since 1988, The Mag is a fiercely independent and strong voice within the Newcastle United fan community, with a proud and long history.  Our challenge was to extend this legacy onto the web for the first time, attempting to take some of their best-loved sections to the web, while also adding a new spin on things.

As a Newcastle United supporter and long-time reader of The Mag, I am especially proud to have been part of this project – it’s been a real joy to be part of the team for the last couple of months!
